The heart of downtown Foxborough, the Common, is a relaxing place to spend some time. Walk around on a cool Fall evening, slide on the icy walkways or have a snowball fight on a frozen winter day, splash in the puddles on a rainy spring afternoon, or have a picnic on a sunny summer day!Spend some time walking around and visiting the memorials, the Meeting House marker, and the bandstand.
In 1857, Erastus P. Carpenter began a concerted effort to transform the former central green into a more usable and attractive public area. Some original and later structures that surrounded the town common were the Cocasset House, the General Store, the Carpenter House, Samaritan Hall, Union Block, Hutchins Block/Boch Block, Baptist Church, Universalist Church, Meeting House, School, and Union Straw Works. The original fencing was made by Otis Cary from the Foxborough Foundry.
In past years, the bandstand on the common served as the final stop during the annual Halloween Parade. Dressed in costumes and often a bit chilly, Foxborough children would begin either at Central Street or, later, the Police Station/Town Hall parking lot, walk uptown, and end at the bandstand, where "best costume" winners in different age groups would win and receive a prize!
Getting older, children, now tweens and teenagers, would hang out on the common, playing frisbee, hopping over the fences, going to movies at Orpheum, riding bicycles, rollerskating, heading to Orville's, the $.05 and $.10, Friendly's, Cumbies, and the Little Shop, crossing the street to go to the Post Office or Doolittle Home, going to or from the Booth or Cocasset River Park, in general, Having Fun!
Then came driver's Licenses and cars....vroom!!
Lately, the Foxborough Common has been blighted by over-signage. It's a rotary! Enter, proceed to the right, if you miss your street or place to park or exit, you can go around again! Really, it's covered in driving manuals so shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. If someone goes around thte common in the wrong direction, chances are they're either drunk, driving under the influence of some other drug, or from a country that drives on the left side of the road!
