Lanterns
Once limited to the wealthy, Lanterns became popular as each town became able to support a tinsmith or coppersmith. Old Lanterns used oiled parchment to protect the flame of the candle from blowing out. Later, mica or the shaved horns of cattle served this purpose. Glass was not widely used until the early 1800's. Many Lanterns were used as warning guides, or as railroad signals. |
